How to Recall a Sent Email in Gmail, Outlook & Yahoo (2026 Guide)

Sent an email to the wrong person? Forgot an attachment? Spotted a typo in the subject line? The good news: in 2026, Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo Mail all have ways to stop or recall a sent email — but they work very differently, and the window to act is short. Here is exactly what to do on each platform right now.

⏱️ Act fast: Gmail gives you up to 30 seconds. Outlook recall can work after the fact but only under specific conditions. Yahoo has a delay-send feature. Read your platform section immediately.

How to Recall a Sent Email in Gmail (2026)

Gmail does not actually “recall” emails in the traditional sense — it uses an Undo Send delay that holds the email on Gmail’s servers before delivering it. Once that window closes, the email has been delivered and cannot be taken back. This is why configuring the maximum delay before you need it matters.

Step 1: Undo a Just-Sent Gmail (Within Your Cancellation Window)

Immediately after sending, look at the bottom-left of your Gmail screen (on desktop) or a pop-up notification (on mobile). You will see a bar that says “Message sent” with an Undo button. Click or tap Undo immediately. The email returns to your drafts and has not been delivered.

On Gmail mobile app: the “Undo” snackbar appears at the bottom of the screen for the duration of your cancellation window. Tap it immediately.

Step 2: Extend Your Undo Window to 30 Seconds (Do This Now)

Gmail’s default cancellation period is 5 seconds — far too short. Change it to the maximum 30 seconds:

  1. Open Gmail → click the Settings gear icon (top right) → click See all settings
  2. Stay on the General tab
  3. Find Undo Send → change Send cancellation period to 30 seconds
  4. Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes

From now on, every email you send waits 30 seconds before delivery, giving you a 30-second window to click Undo. The Gmail Labs step is no longer needed — Undo Send is now a standard Gmail setting since 2021.

What If the Undo Window Has Already Closed?

If more than 30 seconds have passed since sending, Gmail has already delivered the email. There is no way to unsend it. Your options at this point:

  • Send a follow-up email explaining the error and requesting the recipient disregard or delete the previous email
  • If it went to wrong person: Send a polite correction email immediately. If the email contained sensitive information, consider also calling the recipient directly
  • If it was a work email sent via Google Workspace: Your Google Workspace admin may be able to delete messages from inboxes within your organisation using Admin Console → Gmail → Manage emails and chats. This only works for recipients within the same Google Workspace organisation

How to Recall a Sent Email in Outlook (2026)

Outlook has a genuine Recall This Message feature — but it only works under specific conditions that are important to understand before you rely on it.

Conditions Required for Outlook Recall to Work

  • Both you and the recipient must use Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft 365 accounts within the same organisation
  • The recipient must not have opened the email yet
  • The email must still be in the recipient’s Inbox (not moved to a folder or deleted)
  • The recipient must have Automatic Processing enabled (on by default)

If the recipient is on Gmail, Yahoo, or an external email service, Outlook recall will not work. It only functions within closed Microsoft Exchange environments.

How to Recall in Outlook Desktop (Windows)

  1. Go to your Sent Items folder
  2. Double-click the email you want to recall to open it in its own window
  3. In the Message tab, click ActionsRecall This Message
(In newer Microsoft 365: click the three-dot menu → Recall Message)
  4. Choose Delete unread copies of this message or Delete unread copies and replace with a new message
  5. Click OK

Outlook will send you a recall status notification confirming whether the recall succeeded or failed for each recipient.

How to Recall in Outlook on the Web (OWA / Microsoft 365)

  1. Open outlook.office.com → go to Sent Items
  2. Open the email → click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the email toolbar
  3. Select Recall message
  4. Confirm the recall

Delay Send in Outlook (Best Prevention)

The most reliable protection is setting a send delay so all emails wait before delivery:

  1. Go to File → Manage Rules & Alerts → New Rule
  2. Select Apply rule on messages I send → Next
  3. Skip conditions → Next → select defer delivery by a number of minutes
  4. Set to 1–2 minutes → Finish

All outgoing emails will sit in your Outbox for the set delay. Open the Outbox and delete the email during this window to prevent delivery.

How to Unsend an Email in Yahoo Mail (2026)

Yahoo Mail added an Undo Send feature that works similarly to Gmail’s — it delays delivery briefly so you can cancel.

Enable Yahoo Mail Undo Send

  1. Open Yahoo Mail → click the Settings gear icon
  2. Select More Settings
  3. Click Sending email in the left sidebar
  4. Toggle Undo Send to ON and set the delay (5, 10, or 15 seconds)
  5. Click Save

After enabling, a yellow Undo banner appears at the top of Yahoo Mail for a few seconds after sending. Click it immediately to cancel the send. Yahoo’s maximum delay is 15 seconds — shorter than Gmail’s 30 seconds.

Bonus: Apple Mail Undo Send (Up to 60 Minutes)

macOS Ventura and later added an Undo Send option to Apple Mail with a uniquely generous window of up to 60 minutes. Go to Mail → Settings → Composing → set Undo Send Delay to 10, 20, or 60 minutes. During this period, a blue Undo Send link appears in the sidebar under your Sent folder for that email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recall an email that has already been opened?

No — even Outlook’s recall feature cannot retract an email the recipient has already opened. Recall only deletes the email from the recipient’s inbox if it is still unread. Gmail and Yahoo’s undo features work before delivery, so they are not affected by whether the email has been read.

Can I recall an email sent to someone using a different email provider?

Gmail Undo and Yahoo Undo work before the email leaves the server, so they function regardless of the recipient’s provider. Outlook’s Recall This Message only works when both sender and recipient are on the same Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft 365 organisation — it will not recall emails sent to Gmail, Yahoo, or external providers.

What should I do if I sent an email with sensitive information to the wrong person?

Act immediately: send a follow-up email asking them to delete the previous message and not share its contents. If the information is highly sensitive (personal data, financial information, confidential business data), contact your IT or legal team — depending on your jurisdiction, a data breach notification may be legally required. Under GDPR, organisations must report certain personal data breaches to their supervisory authority within 72 hours.

Is there a way to recall an email in Gmail on mobile?

Yes — on the Gmail mobile app, immediately after sending you will see an “Undo” snackbar notification at the bottom of the screen. Tap it within your cancellation window (up to 30 seconds if you have configured it). The Undo Send cancellation period you set on desktop also applies to the mobile app.

For which email provide? The process is already explained.

  • ~. unfortunately, it’s not possible in yahoomail! 🙁 and then I sent my personalized test banks to somebody and due to circumstances I was not able to be the reviewer and just, BOOM! I could no longer recall my test banks. I am just hoping that they would not use my hard-think reviewer questions.
