This is a 13-digit retail barcode that originates in America but is used throughout the world.  Most retailers will prefer this barcode.  It is used on any normal retail product such as a tub of ice cream, a bottle of coke or even a cd.  EAN barcodes are very versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways.
