But when they do finally break through the white noise, many start to experience the difficulty of fulfilling orders because of the huge increase in demand.

This is a critical stage in a business’s growth. By not fulfilling orders a business’s brand becomes in danger of being damaged. A tarnished reputation means fewer sales and lost customers, it’s that simple.

So, how have other companies in the past navigated the rough waters during this moment in their business’s history?

Including utilizing the most advanced technologies, many of them turn to MRP systems to counter their companies growing list of issues. But what is an MRP system?

An MRP system is a material requirement planning system which calculates the procurement plan for the necessary components and the production planning based on product specifications, projected demand, and the technological production environment.

The process of planning using MRP systems is carried out as follows:

1. The MRP system planning is based on the production schedule. Some MRP systems can calculate a product’s completion time considering various factors such as working hours and tool availability;

2. Another element is a list of materials required for production, determined by the product’s bill of materials. The software will inform the user of the quantity needed for production and if they’re understocked; and

3. Data on stock status is an equally important planning issue. This data allows both determining the exact resources necessary to be acquired and calculating additional costs associated with the processes required to ensure the production.

The purpose of MRP systems is that any accounting unit of materials or components necessary for the production has to be available at the right time and in the right quantity.

Therefore, an MRP system allows a manufacturer to track stock levels to avoid delaying production, which will reduce carrying costs and help them fulfill orders on time.
