When it comes to computer users there are usually considered two levels. There are the people who are experienced and they have been using them for a while. And then there are the people who are not experienced. While they do use the computer, they do not know a lot about them and how they work. People like this are considered casual users and there are a lot more of them then there are of people who are on the higher level.
Casual Computer Users
When you are a casual user you can sometimes feel like a deer in the headlights. While you know that there are dangers out on the internet, you might not quite know how to avoid them. Even when you hear experts talk about the dangers that you are facing the language that they use is indecipherable to you. If you are considered a computer security expert then you need to take this into consideration. If someone is trying to protect users from the bad guys then they need to keep the talk with the least amount of technical terms as possible. Even when you use minor technical terms you are going to go over a lot of people’s heads. It is them that you are trying to protect so make sure that whenever you speak in a general setting that you are speaking where the casual user will be able to follow you.
If you are a casual user then we are here to try and help you out when it comes to computer security. We will try to keep the discussion with minimal technical terms and easy instructions on how you can help yourself. I know that it can be frustrating when you are confused by a situation but if you want to get full enjoyment when you use the internet or just your computer then you have to be sure that you are using it safely. If you do not and you get caught in a bad situation then you are not going to want to go online anymore.
Security Software For The Inexperienced
When you are a casual user the first step that you should take is to get some sort of outside protection on your computer. When we say outside protection what we mean is some sort antivirus software. There are a lot to choose from and the choices can be confusing but since you are a casual user then you should go with one of the big brands. There might be better services out there but the big brands like Norton cater to the casual user and they try to make the experience as painless as possible. When you feel more comfortable with how the software works then you can graduate up to a product that might be a little more appreciated with people who consider themselves experts. Right now though, Norton should be more than enough.
Avoid Adult And File Sharing Sites
The next step that you are going to want to take is to watch where you are going online. You cannot just the surf the web with any link that gets presented to you. You have to be more discriminatory than that. You have to be sure that the websites that you go to are safe. So there are certain websites that you are going to want to stay away from. Sketchy adult sites and illegal file sharing sites should be number one on the list. Any site that does not give you a good feeling when you are on it should be avoided at all cost.
Protect Your Information
And finally, really be careful who you give your information to. When you are giving out any information about yourself, make sure that it is a site that you can trust. If you do not then you will be one of the many victims that you always hear about.
