The Google Zoo: Penguin and Panda; What’s The Difference?

Google has created two algorithms that have removed websites from the top of the usual rankings on search engines with the intent to ‘clean up’ web spam. Due to this many webmasters are in a state of shock because their websites have gone from the peak of rankings to disappearing upon update thus resulting in a near halt of organic traffic and more importantly the revenue that traffic generates. Google has created Penguin and the Panda to penalize those websites that do not adhere to their terms of service.  Many site owners have begun to see changes in the amount of traffic that reaches their sites and are aware that it is because of Google Penguin and Panda. Individuals know that the main goal of these websites is to remove unwanted content, but it is also important to know what the difference between both of them is.

The more popular one is Google Panda (arguably because it has been around for over a year now) and it tries to decrease the low quality of websites showing up in the search engines. On the other hand Google Penguin penalizes websites that use spamming and black hat SEO expertise. Panda’s goal was to lower ranking of those websites that contained copied, spun, or otherwise content that had little value added.  The individuals that were affected the most were the black hat SEO’s who lazily submitted articles many times over and over again just to get more links. Of course the article directories housing such spam, such as Ezine were hit equally as hard.  Panda defeated these websites and only allowed the ones with original content and great research to stay on top. They did this by checking the overall rankings and searching the website pages for poor quality content. It also played a great role in advancing those websites that had been in lower rankings but had excellent material. The other huge Google algorithm update, Penguin plays an important role in catching those websites that are not adhering to Google’s rules; particularly those with unnatural links.

According to MicrositeMasters the Penguin update detected those who were too aggressive with their keyword targeting by determining those who had an unnatural ratio of anchor text backlinks to branded text backlinks. We all know what anchor texts backlinks are but what is a branded text backlink?  It is simply using ‘your brand’ or ‘yourbrand.com’ or ‘yourbrand’ as anchor text.  Logically thinking, when you organically link to another site this is how you do it.  Using the data from MicrositeMasters a website with a backlink portfolio that contains 95% anchor text backlinks and only 5% branded text backlinks; this is likely to be penalized by penguin.

Due to these two algorithm updates many websites have seen their rankings go down drastically. Many webmasters are upset and many have lost their primary source of income, but the bottom line is these two unique algorithm updates have each done an effective job of cleaning web spam from the search results in their own manner.  While many individuals who have have petitioned against both Google Penguin and Panda, they do not realize that these two algorithm updates are actually helping people around the globe get information that they need more conveniently. The focus of Google was to give quality material to the public that they actually need. Due to these two creations we do not have to scroll through the many pages just to find the relevant information that we need. They have made our lives a lot easier and have made research more effective. Those that are SEO marketers should understand how to create quality unique content and follow Google’s rules if they want good rankings.
