Sony may be about to release a new tablet as a follow up to its Tablet P and Tablet S models, an online source from the XDA-Developers forum who claimed to work for Sony revealed.
The internal document slides displayed in the actual forum post suggested that an Android tablet featuring a 9.4-inch display and a 1200 by 800 pixel resolution is well under way. Reportedly 42% thinner than its predecessors, the upcoming tablet purportedly weighs 570 grams (1.26 pounds) and is expected to sport a folded-over bump at the back of its asymmetric aluminum-magnesium alloy body. Additionally, the forum poster said it will have a sandblasted, anodized finish.
The slideshow, which was also posted on German tech site Mobiflip, further revealed that the tablet has an anti-fingerprint coating, a glare minimizer, and a color and vibrancy booster in its splash-proof and slim body. Sony has also identified it as an “entertainment-oriented” tablet with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Furthermore, it will run on Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich (and maybe 4.1 or Jelly Bean, later on) and will have an eight (8) megapixel rear camera and a one (1) megapixel front-facing camera.
It is said to be capable of up to roughly 10 hours of continuous Wi-Fi browsing due to its 6,000 mAh battery. There were no Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and 3G versions specified from the slides, so connectivity will probably include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, and 3G, most likely to give users the capability to make VoIP calls using services such as RingCentral whether they’re on Wi-Fi or through their carrier’s data connection.
It also features a “Guest Mode,” which allows owners to restrict some app access when being used by others. Best of all, it was reported that the upcoming Xperia tablet is capable of playing games downloaded from the PlayStaytion Store.
The Sony Xperia tablet will have a charging cradle that will let you launch apps even your device docked. A dock speaker will also be available for users who would want to use it for listening to music or video viewing. Aside from these two, tablet stands that will come in three angle options, carrying cases that will come in seven colors, horizontal docking stands with USB and HDMI ports, and covers with built-in, integrated keyboards will be available for the device. The latter accessory, whose suggested retail price is $99.99, was revealed to resemble Microsoft’s Surface tablet cover. In the coming months, expect Sony to showcase the tablet with these retail accessories to boost sales.
Prices are pegged at $399.99 for the 16GB version, followed by the 32GB version priced at $499.99, and a 64GB version priced with a $599.99 tag. Fans are advised to wait for the official announcement from Sony in the coming weeks (hopefully in mid-August) for the full specs of the hyped Xperia tablet. Meanwhile, speculations abound that Sony may unveil the new Xperia item at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (International radio exhibition Berlin) or IFA Berlin 2012, which is slated to happen on the 31st of August.
