Over the last year, SD-WAN has exploded onto the networking scene, and many business owners are hoping that it can replace the more expensive MPLS option. This could have something to do with the fact that SD-WAN is often marketed specifically as the end of MPLS in business networking. So is this new technology really the successor to a system that has now been around long enough to draw the irritation of everyone who has used it? Or are we perhaps jumping the gun when it comes to this new technology?
SD-WAN technology is the newest form of networking system, and it provides a more flexible, open style of networking that is still secure and uniquely suited to fit modern business needs. This is due, in large part, to the fact that it is designed specifically for the software that these businesses use, most importantly cloud applications. As we are still only scratching the surface of the possibilities for the cloud in business, it is not hard to imagine that SD-WAN technology will only grow in popularity and usefulness.
The main idea behind SD-WAN technology in the business world is to deliver a fast, reliable and simple WAN connection using as much software-based technology as possible. While it can be beneficial for basic WAN connectivity, it can also be used with business services such as virtual private networking (VPN), WAN optimization and applications delivery control (ADC).
Because of its software-based concept, SD-WAN eliminates the need for much of the hardware needed for other traditional WAN options. Since much of this hardware is expensive and requires a high-level of attention and manpower to maintain, this can obviously appeal to many business owners. Additionally, SD-WAN technology essentially makes the entire cloud your network, and this allows for potentially unlimited bandwidth and upgrade possibilities.
Is SD-WAN better than MPLS?
As business owners seek newer, more efficient, less expensive ways to stay ahead of the competition, this question began to pop up on message boards, and now SD WAN article has various levels of helpful (and accurate) information. After all, MPLS can be an expensive and complicated networking technology to maintain, and even then, it has some clear drawbacks when compared to the possibilities of SD-WAN.
Aside from the significant cost difference, SD-WAN technology is much more adaptable and uniquely suited to fit into the modern, cloud-hungry business world. It can also have some advantages in terms of performance and security when used properly, and there could be many more benefits, depending upon the industry and needs of the business.
However, while SD-WAN may be a fresher, superior technology that clearly has more potential than traditional networking options, these two technologies are not mutually exclusive. One of the biggest advantages that SD-WAN networking has over similar technologies is the fact that it can be used on any type of WAN. Many businesses have found the best option (for now at least) is to keep their MPLS and add an additional Internet connection that is specifically for SD-WAN, giving them the best of both worlds and providing adaptability depending on real-time needs.
