Microsoft Windows XP Doesn’t Recognize Available Hard Drive Space

Is Microsoft Windows XP operating system unable to recognize all the available hard drive space? Do you get ‘Low disk space’ error while trying to boot your system or performing general computer operations? This problem may occur due to corruption to some operating system libraries or system data structures. To fix this behavior, you need to format the hard drive, repartition it, and then reinstall operating system. Before you go for any of the these solutions, you must create complete backup of your data, if possible. Otherwise, you may come across serious data loss situations, which require Windows data recovery to be fixed.

For instance, Your Windows XP hard drive, which has 30 GB of storage capacity, may be shown as 2 GB in Windows Explorer or Disk Management Snap-in. When it occurs, you cannot boot the system, store new files to your Windows hard drive, and access store data, even if you have ample hard drive space. It may also give you the following error message:

“Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on <Drive Letter>.”

You can try fixing this behavior using any of the below methods:

  • First of all Insert the installation CD of Microsoft Windows XP operating system and run the Setup process. It helps you determine whether your hard drive space is accessible. You can run the Setup without deleting Windows XP partition.
  • If the above method does not work, update BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) of your computer or use the boot manager. If you find out the your system has BIOS related problem, which is preventing the system from recognizing hard drive properly, then either update the BIOS or use third-party boot manger for accessing hard drive space.
  • Format the hard drive and repartition the same using Fdisk utility from Windows ME installation disk. Upon repartitioning, reinstall the operating system using Setup program. You should use this method only as a last resort as it removes all the data from hard drive and put you in need of Windows recovery.

You can easily recover Windows data using third-party applications, known as Windows recovery software. They use advanced scanning algorithms to perform extensive scan of affected hard drive and extract all lost data from it.
