2012 has been a good year for LG, the company which wasn’t getting much attention from the tech-community and consumers alike for its Smartphones against the global giants Samsung, HTC, etc. got rave reviews for Nexus 4, which it designed in partnership with Google. Since then, LG is trying harder for getting back into the Smartphone race. It has already created LG Optimus G series for catering to high-end Smartphone buyers and LG Optimus L series for low-end Smartphone buyers. Now company is focusing on the mid-range Smartphones with the launch of Optimus F series (F signifies Freedom). LG announced F series with LG Optimus F5 and LG Optimus F7 in Mobile World Congress in February this year in Barcelona, which will be available for retail in Q2 in Europe. Let’s take a look what these Smartphones offer-
Both the phones may not win any awards for their design, but they still look pleasing to eyes, though F7 looks more premium as compared to F5. The F7 has the dimensions of 131.7 x 68.2 x 9.6mm making it handy and at par with other Smartphones being released nowadays. Its younger brother, F5 is a bit more compact with dimensions of 126.0 x 64.5 x 9.3mm. Both the phones are made up of plastic body, making them lightweight. Optimus F7 has 4.7” true IPS HD (1280 x 720 pixels) display translating to 312 pixels per inches, while Optimus F5 has 4.3” plain IPS qHD (960 x 540 pixels) display equating to 256 pixels per inches. Due to this, colors come out sharper and crisper in F7 against F5.
While F7 features a physical Home button bracketed by capacitive back and menu buttons and a dedicated camera key, F5 has a small power and volume keys aligned on the edges with capacitive touch-sensitive key replacing the physical home button. The F7 would be available in white color with its back featuring hexagonal pattern with varying tones and shades. On the other hand, F5 would be available in black color with its back featuring a unique design of diamond pattern.
The F7 is powered by mid-level 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, whereas a 1.2 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor powers the F5. The F7 packs in 2 GB RAM, while F5 a 1 GB RAM. The internal memory of both phones is 8 GB, which is expandable up to 32 GB via MicroSD cards. Both the Smartphones are fueled by good amount of battery power with a 2540mAh battery for Optimus F7 and 2150mAh battery for Optimus F5.
In the photography department, F7 sports an 8 megapixels camera with auto-focus and F5 a 5 megapixels camera with auto-focus. Both of them have a secondary camera of 1.3 MP for video-calling purposes. Though, exact specifications are not known, but it can be safely assumed that the rear camera will be capable of shooting 1080 p videos, while the front camera would be capable of shooting 720 p videos.
Since both the phones would be in the same F series, they will share a lot of features with each other. The biggest USP with which LG is promoting this series is the capability of 4G LTE in these phones. They have standard network options for 2G and 3G, and usual connectivity options with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, etc.
They also have run on same Android 4.1.2 version (JellyBean) which is customized by LG for few advanced software features like QSlide and Live Zooming.
The QSlide gives user the option to open two apps simultaneously, in full screen mode. The transparency, size and position of QSlide apps can be adjusted according to one’s preferences. Functions currently attuned with QSlide are browser, memo, video, calculator and calendar. While watching video, live zooming permits user to zoom for a specific area.
Video Wiz, QuickMemo, Safety Care (It delivers alerts to family members, if user leaves a certain area or don’t checks-in to a particular area for a while), QTranslator and much more are some add-on features in Optimus F Series.
While the price of the phones wasn’t announced by LG, we hope that they will be priced aggressively for the Indian market. Considering the Smartphones market presently, there are multitudes of options in low-end or premium range, but dearth of good options in the range of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000. If priced right, they would definitely come across as a complete package with decent hardware and latest Android OS.
