The talk of the town regarding mobile payment has been NFC technology. The medium still has a limit as to what phones it can run on and which types of payment will work with it. But what if NFC was just taken completely out of the equation? This is the question that the app LevelUp answers.

The app is free for iPhone and Android and lets you link a credit or debit card to your account. In doing so, you get a custom QR code. Now instead of spending time to take out your credit card, you just use your phone and scan the code to pay. Although it may seem simple, it really isn’t that much of an incentive for people to switch to mobile payment when they are already so used to taking out their credit cards at the cash register.

This is where LevelUp brings in the incentives and starts differentiating itself as a loyalty program. By joining LevelUp businesses can offer rewards for customers, even if it would be their first time shopping. For example, a restaurant could offer a free burger to anyone who comes in and pays with the LevelUp app. This gets consumers into the door and every subsequent time they visit and pay with their phone, businesses can offer free credit or other incentives.

On the business side of things, it is relatively easy to join. The app is free, you have access to analytics, and there is only a flat 2% processing fee. Since its launch, LevelUp has gained a user base of over 100,000 and it has attracted the attention of over 1000 merchants, as well as T-Mobile who partnered with the startup.
