Why DSL Is Not An Option
Digital subscriber line (DSL) is a widely spread technology that relies on the so-called POTS, or plain old telephone service. It has been in use since the days of long ago, or, to be precise, the end of the 19th century. Its infrastructure is comprised of good old copper wires that are incapable of providing high-speed Internet access.
Consumer-grade DSL solutions managed to make use of this older technology; however, these are nowhere near leased line network solutions required by businesses.

What’s more, it’s the stability and reliability of your connection that is vital for any business: you simply cannot go offline and pretend that nothing happened.
Leased Line Network Solutions: Fast and Reliable
Unlike DSL that provides average transmission rate at 10 Mb/s, a leased line network can operate at 1 or 10 Gb/s. It’s several orders of magnitude we are talking about. To put it into perspective, it will take you roughly 12 minutes to download a 1 GB file over your DSL broadband connection. The same file will be downloaded in less than a second over a dedicated connection.
It gets yet more convincing if you compare upload rates. Due to its asymmetric nature, upstream rate is much slower in DSLs than downloads. Think about dozens of minutes vs. one second. Watching paint dry may look like a more appealing pastime then uploading that video over DSL.
Reliability of DSL connection also leaves much to be desired. High latency, packet loss, slowdowns at peak times, maintenance works when you need it least-what’s not to love. Leased line subscribers, on the other hand, may be sure that their business-critical applications will have all the bandwidth they need, anytime, anywhere. And it comes with 24/7 support service.
Scalability is another issue to consider. Copper wiring has very modest physical limitations, whilst enterprise-grade fiber-optic cables are basically limited by the speed of light. That’s exactly why dedicated leased lines are called “future-proof”: its terminal equipment may be upgraded to newer versions using existing cables that have huge reserve factor.
That said, for businesses upgrading to dedicated solutions is a question of time: the demand for bandwidth will continue to grow, and strategic investment into a leased line network now will be more than justified.
