The developers at Joomla are very pleased to launch the latest version Joomla 3.0 that was released on 26th of September, 2012 and has been available for download for everyone around the world. This is one of the major launches from Joomla in the STS track and users who update to version 3.0 will have to update to every launch in the time based release cycle that is going to launch new version after every six months till the LTS version 3.5 is released. All the updates to Joomla’s latest versions are quick, easy and backward compatible.
For whom the version 3.0 is specifically designed?
The versions of Joomla in STS track are devised and launched for users who want to incorporate latest and new bunch of features. Many users who are currently having version 2.5 will not need to upgrade the CMS to version 3.0. Individuals who are planning to set up and develop new websites can either use version 2.5 or 3.0. The selection of 2.5 or 3.0 depends on the user’s preferences and demands. For those who want number of stable extensions and templates will ultimately go for version 2.5 as not many vendors have currently announced the availability of 3.0 extensions and templates. And users who are planning to use version 3.0 must keep in mind that they would have to upgrade their website after every six months till the LTS joomla version 3.5 is released. All the updates before 3.5 are said to be quite easy and simple.
Joomla version 2.5’s Status
The Joomla content management system 2.5 is an LTS version i.e. long term support and it will remain valid till the version 3.5 is launched that is expected to be released in the mid of year 2014. Users who are having websites powered by Joomla version 2.5 do not essentially need to update to version 3.0
Joomla version 1.5’s status
The joomla version 1.5’s validity will end soon after the release of version 3.0. It has been supported currently for just some security issues. Users having version 1.5 have to update their websites immediately.
Will users be able to switch directly to 3.0 from version 2.5?
Problems related to update will be tackled on top priority basis. Many of the extensions and templates for 2.5 will need to get altered and modified for the version 3.0. Cross check the templates and extensions before switching to version 3.0 and talk to the extension and templates’ developer for support issues and availability status. Also keep in mind that system requirements for version 3.0 differ from those of version 2.5. You will need to adjust and modify the system and configuration settings prior to installing version 3.0
