Introduction to Different Android Versions

Android is considered to be a popular and much demanded platform for tablets and smart phones. When anybody talks about Smartphone, it is necessarily about a smart phone based on Android OS. Many people commonly use the term Android OS however, most of them are not aware about what Android is actually and how it has been evolved to be such powerful and demanded OS for electronic gadgets.

1) History of Android

Android was introduced in the market by the IT giant –Google in November 2007 with the name Android 1.0 beta. Since then it was declared from Google that, Android as open source project. It was basically developed as an OS for mobile smart phones and tablet devices. Since then a large community of developers and programmers got involved in this project. New versions of Android were released to solve some bugs and issues present in the code. Some enthusiastic developers put some new codes to introduce new functionality and features for the OS. All the programming for Android is required to be done in programming language called JAVA. There are many major and minor versions released for this particular operating systems and each major release was named after a dessert. In this article let us take a look at the some of the versions of Android Operating System.

2) Android Version 2.1

Android 2.1 is considered to be the first version which was used commercially in the market during the year 2008. The code name used for this version was Edair. Some prominent features of this version are as follows –

1. Improved User Interface to suit screens with higher resolutions

2. Email programs were supported in this version

3. Multi –user account support

3. Live Wall paper support

4. Flash Support for cameras were supported

3) Android Version 2.2

More advanced features were introduced in this version as Android 2.1 was commercial success and many users liked the operations provided in it. Basic difference in this version was that it was capable of loading or installing application on the memory card provided in the device rather than installing application just on the phone memory card. This features waived the limitation of installing less number of applications on the smart phone or tablet device. Other features introduced were –

1. Connectivity for USP devices

2.  Wi-Fi support

3. Multimedia Content Management in smarter way

4. Ability to receive and send notifications in Push style

4) Android Version 4.0

This is the latest version available for Android OS with a code name called Ice Cream Sandwich. This can be commonly used for Android based smart phones as well as tablet devices too. This version comprises of all the latest as well as features from older versions in improved fashion. Some of the latest features of this version are –

1. Support for Face recognition

2. Customizing capacity for apps launcher

3. Ability for tabs in browser

4. Photo editor is provided as built-in application

5. Support for auto synchronization with social media or network websites

6. Better interfacing for more than one camera devices

Summary – Android is an open source OS project from Google which is primarily used for smart phones and tablet type devices. It has seen many changes since its commercial launch and is considered to be a popular OS.
