While it’s nothing like its predecessor, the original Wii, Nintendo’s latest offering, the Wii U, is all about getting the whole family involved in a completely unique gaming experience. Fun and entertainment aside, the Wii U also boasts a small list of health benefits, most impressively in the vision department. While it won’t take away your need for glasses or contact lenses, it definitely can improve your eyesight in a number of ways. Below are three of the ways that it does so.

gaming improve eyesight

Spatial Resolution

Numerous studies have been done recently testing how video games affect people’s vision. Most of the studies have come back with positive results. In fact, from the looks of things, it seems that playing video games multiple times per week actually increases spatial resolution by nearly twenty percent.

Spatial resolution is the ability to identify small objects more clearly even when they’re in a crowded mass. Being able to see small symbols on a doctor’s eye chart even when other symbols are crowded nearby is a prime example. The Wii U performs well in this area because of its often hectic and colorful games that force you to really keep your eyes on your character. Simply put, the Wii U is like a pile of weights for your eyes – it helps make them stronger.

Hand-Eye Coordination

Because it comes equipped with a handheld control instead of the remote controls made world-famous by the original Wii, the Wii U doesn’t perform quite as well at improving hand-eye coordination as its older sibling. But the fact of the matter is that it still does – and it does so well. Part of the reason for this is that anything that you do where you’re looking at one thing and using your hands for something different improves your coordination. In the case of the Wii U you’re looking at a screen and pushing buttons with your fingers. But the system takes it one step further with its unique two-screen display – one screen is on your controller and the other is your TV. Switching your vision from screen to screen pushes your hand-eye coordination and reflexes to the max.

Focus

Video game systems have been continuously shown to improve visual focus in long-term users. The Wii U does this particularly well because, like with hand-eye coordination, it challenges users to focus on more than one screen at once – the handheld screen and the television screen. Then there is the fact that you have to keep track of what is happening within a game while you’re playing. Oftentimes, it’s multiple things at once. Video game users in general are able to visually focus and keep track of as many as six things at once without getting confused. Non-gamers normally only can focus on four.

While video games obviously do have health benefits, especially where vision is concerned, that’s not to say that they’re the only way that you can improve your eyesight or brain function. Several other “everyday” activities such as reading, watching television, playing sports, or driving your car also challenge your brain and work your eyes. As long as you use your eyes as the muscles that they are, you’ll be strengthening them and improving your vision on a daily basis.
