How to Keep Your Reader’s Attention

Okay, so you’ve managed to catch your reader’s attention and make them click on your blog post. But how do you keep their attention long enough so that they read your post in its entirety? Remember that Web users are an impatient crowd, that is, they can easily click away from your site if they get bored, if they don’t find your post useful, or if they get frustrated – either because they can’t find the information they need or because they don’t understand what you’re saying. Well, here are some tips to keep readers glued to your post:

Use a conversational tone when writing

Write your blog with an informal or conversational tone. Writing in a very formal tone can frustrate your readers because it would make them feel like they are reading a text book. It’s also bound to be quite harder to understand. Remember that when you publish content on the Web, the whole world becomes your audience and so you should consider that not everyone will find it easy to understand complex words. On the other hand, if you write with a conversational tone, your post comes out as being friendlier and warmer. It also makes your post a light read, which your readers will enjoy more.

Keep your blog post relatively short

Refrain from writing a very long blog post. This can overwhelm your reader and make them click away. Instead, keep your post brief and stay close to your topic in order to meet your reader’s expectations. When readers click on your post, it’s because they’re interested to read about the information that you have shared. By keeping your blog post short and to the point, your readers are able to quickly get the information that they need, which will keep them from getting frustrated and bored.

If you have plenty to say about your topic then divide it into smaller topics and write separate blog posts for each subtopic. For example, if you’re writing about tips on online shopping then you might have one blog post for how to get the best deals online, another post for how to ensure secure payment, and another post for how to handle damaged items. Don’t put all of these on one blog post! Instead, you can just add links to the related blog posts at the end of each post. This gives the reader the choice of whether they want to read more or not. This way, you’re not forcing them to read the entire thing; rather, you’re allowing them to jump to the particular topics that interest them.

Use white space effectively

Try to use white space whenever possible. This means having an extra space after the title, after each paragraph, before and after bulleted lists, or after subheadings. White space can help the eyes relax while reading. Having everything clumped together not only strains the eyes but can also make it difficult for the reader to find the information that they need, which can again make them feel frustrated. By having a lot of white space, you make reading a more pleasant experience for your readers.
