Wi-Fi is arguably one of a consumers most powerful tool, allowing computers, tablets, and smartphones to access a high speed Internet connection. While Apple’s slew of iOS devices are arguably some of the most sophisticated mobile computing solutions on the market, the company is no stranger to Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Millions of affected consumers discovered this to be the case recently, when iOS 6 was released to the general public. Both iPhone 5 users and older phone owners who have upgraded to the latest firmware have reported difficulty in accessing certain Wi-Fi networks, rendering the device nearly useless.
Compatibility Issues with Wi-Fi Routers
Compatibility appears to be the biggest problem for iOS users, with some networks simply unable to be accessed on Apple devices. Netgear routers appear to be particularly impacted by this issue. Customers have complained of these problems on Apple’s official support pages, but no patch currently exists for the issue. Those wishing to continue using their devices on such networks have been forced to downgrade their devices to previous versions of the iOS mobile operating system.
Apple’s Response to the Issue
Problems with iOS devices are rarely admitted by Apple’s development team. When users first experienced issues after the release of iOS 6, the company quickly responded with a simple fix: replacing a web page on Apple’s server that helps facilitate Wi-Fi connections. Apparently, many users were unable to connect to Wi-Fi networks of their choosing because the necessary file had gone missing. Unfortunately, this simple fix has not resolved all of the Wi-Fi problems consumers have reported. Apple has not commented on the ongoing resolution of such issues.
Secured Network Problems
Secured networks pose a problem for certain Apple devices, including the iPhone 4S and the iPad 3. Some consumers have found success in connecting to a network by resetting their phone’s settings. Others recommend enabling the auto selection of an HTTP proxy. Still other users have been unable to find a resolution for the problem, leaving them frustrated and annoyed by the complicated situation.
The problems these devices have experienced are far from the only Wi-Fi issues currently affecting Apple customers. Some iOS users have found their devices are unable to even attempt a Wi-Fi connection, with the option grayed out on their devices. That problem has not been addressed in the slightest, as customers instead try the standard fixes that often resolve problems that can crop up on Apple products. Hard and soft resets, network resets, and reinstalling the operating system entirely have proven futile for such individuals.
While experiencing a Wi-Fi compatibility issue from time to time is not a totally foreign concept for technology manufacturers, Apple seems to have encountered a particularly dizzying array of complications with its latest iOS release. For the time being, frustrated consumers have had little success in resolving these issues, leaving them largely without recourse. If history is any indication of what’s to come, such iOS users will likely need to wait until a future fix is developed by the technology giant. In the meantime, connecting to Wi-Fi networks will likely continue to prove hit and miss for users of these devices.
