5 Myths About Blogging

Updated October 6, 2023

The web is filled with experts, every niche has a so called authority but only a few are able to live up to their billing and offer their readers what they have promised. Blogging is no different. Blogs are one of the most popular types of sites on the net and as many of us have discovered they can be a nice way to earn a little extra cash. Because of this more and more people want in and to cater for that there are countless “experts” who offer them a fool proof solution to get them blogging and earning, all they need to do is part with their cash and all their secrets will be revealed. It’s only after time that a newbie blogger figures out the truth about blogging, so here are my 5 myths about blogging.

blogging myths

  • Myth 1: Blogging is Easy. The idea that blogging is easy stems from the fact that anyone can write and publish content on the net. Having a blog that adds real value to the community takes more than just writing. It takes research and sharing your thoughts, ideas and expertise with others. Writing something that others will find useful and informative can take time and can’t be rushed.
  • Myth 2: Blogging belongs to those who can write. Blogging is the most liberating form of writing, you can write about anything you like there are no restrictions or limitations. Blogging is about conversation, try and write a piece that speaks to your readers.
  • Myth 3: A blog post needs to be 500 words. No one cares if you blog in one sentence or a hundred because people will visit your site because they want to hear what you have to say, if it makes sense to say it in a couple of sentences then do that. If this is what you want to do they why not go for one of the microblogging platforms like Twitter.  If a couple of sentences won’t work  then use one of the more traditional platforms like WordPress, Blogger, or Typepad.
  • Myth 4: I’ll lose readers if they don’t agree with my opinions. We’ve all heard stories about bloggers who have been sued because of something they have wrote, ok these are extreme cases but it can be good to ruffle a few feathers with what you say and as the saying goes there is no such thing as bad publicity and you’ll find some bloggers will actively criticize something just so they can get a reaction, this can be known as link bait. When somebody actively publishes something that will get a reaction for their audience and in doing so will attract links from other blogs.
  • Myth 5: Blogging is a mere past time and there’s no money in it. In the beginning blogs were used as an outlet for people to put their thoughts, ideas and aspirations down for the world to read. The idea of making money from a blog had never crossed many people’s minds. That’s all changed; some of the most influential bloggers in a niche can make a tidy living from the advertising on their sites. Boing Boing, Shoemoney, Steve Pavlina, John Chow, TechCrunch, and Problogger are some of the most profitable bloggers on the net today. Aspiring to be like any of these sites is beyond the ability of most of us, but the revenue streams that these sites use are freely open to any of us, we won’t make as much as they do, but we can definitely secure some additional pocket money for our efforts.

Well there you have it, hopefully I have busted some of the myths centered around blogging. You can start a blog for free in 5 minutes, it doesn’t matter if you have got something important to say, or if you just want to rant there will always be someone who is interested in what you have to say.

Nice points… I was really impressed by 1st point. Many newbie bloggers start blogging with a hope of getting tons of hits in no time, which is really difficult. I guess this article will help a lot for such beginners.
