Yahoo Mail Vs Gmail- Which One is better ?

The question of which e-mail service is better, Yahoo mail or Gmail is a rather hotly debated one. In this article the strengths and weaknesses of the individual services will be examined in order to try and determine which one is best for a person’s needs.

yahoo vs google

Integration of IM and Email

One strong advantage that Gmail has over Yahoo mail is that it allows you to send instant messages to your contacts that are online quickly and easily. While Yahoo has IM as well, it is not nearly as accessible as the one found within Gmail. This is because Yahoo’s IM is separate from its e-mail service. This means that one cannot send quick chat messages in the form of e-mail to contacts and friends on Yahoo, but would instead have to open an entirely new chat bar. This, undoubtedly, would be annoying to most people.

Flexibility with Attachments

Another way in which Gmail shines is in the use of attachments. A person, once done with their e-mail message, is able to quickly and easily put up as many attachments as needed. Yahoo mail requires you to go to a separate screen in order to put up attachments, and you can only put up 5 without being required to add more boxes. Thus, Gmail seems much less of a hassle if one has to send a large amount of attachments.

Folder Organization

One area in which Yahoo mail actually does shine is in the fact that it allows better folder creation and organization. Gmail, while it allows you to label folders, keeps all your folders in approximately the same area, making organization with a large amount of folders difficult. Yahoo mail allows you to label and organize your folders how you like making the mail system better for those who require large amounts of folders that can be easily accessed.

Size of Attachments

One big advantage that Gmail has over Yahoo mail is that Gmail allows for a bigger attachment size. Yahoo mail only allows attachments up to 10mb on its free version, while Gmail allows up to 20mb on its free version. Thus, if you need to put large attachments on your e-mail, whether due to school or work, Gmail has a clear advantage over Yahoo mail.

Brand Impact

Probably one of the more important aspects of Gmail is the fact that it is considered the more “professional” of the e-mail services. People seem to have the strong belief that Gmail is the more credible of the two e-mail services and, due to first impressions being so important, Gmail is a clear winner in professional credibility.

So who’s the winner ?

Overall it seems that Gmail is a clear winner. It’s easily accessible which is very important for people who have large amounts of experience with e-mail as well as for those who are just stepping into the digital world. Gmail also allows larger attachments then Yahoo mail, which is critical for those like students or businesspeople that need to get large amounts of material to the proper place. Another, and quite possibly the biggest,  advantage that Gmail offers is that it is seen as the more professional email service. For those in the business world, such a reputation is very important.

    Gmail is the best

  • Gmail is shit. Gmail made me do a horrible mistake. I forwarded AN email to boss, but the title was hidden by default so could not change it and lost my job. Never use this piece of shit. One who designed gmail are idiots. They think users are IT expert and know each and every feature of their piece of shit in details. Don’t be fooled by their offerings of big data, big attachements etc. otherwise you will pay the price some day, just like me. These idiots added so many features in gmail with hidden complexities. Go for a simple email system. In my opinion, yahoo mail does not boast for big things like shitty gmail but delivers something simple and comprehensible.

  • Hi,
Gmail lacks many features which are present in Yahoo mail:

    – ‘mark as read/unread’ dot, ‘delete’ button and ‘search’ button besides ‘star’ button

    – on searching specific email id, sorting mails in to ‘To’, ‘From’ and ‘All’ in tabs

    – continuous scrolling inbox

    – automatic date separated mails

    – sorting mails by new date on top, oldest date on top, sender, unread etc

    – well defined ‘From’, ‘To’, ‘CC/BCC’ fields area

    – adding another email account easily

    – multitasking tab email view

    There are more.

  • Feature wise yahoo is way better. Few list of features not present in gmail:
    – continuous scroll inbox
    – email separated by date
    – mark as read dot
    – adding another email account easily (no POP)

While Gmail is definitely better in most ways, I cannot agree with the professional one. I have never received Spam that wasn’t from a Gmail account. As a professional myself, I don’t see yahoo or gmail as professional since they are both free email servers. But, if I were to trust one over the other as being from a legitimate person, I would have to go with Yahoo.

  • Yahoo may suit users but if you are running your own mail server or have medium size web company and want to send your users regular mails or transactional mails then yahoo fails miserably. I have a site and i have blacklisted yahoo mail ids for signups. I have pushed all my users to gmail. And nobody is complaining. Yahoo blocks servers with its weird spam control filters. This hurts genuine website owners. If you are a professional web developer then you will know which is a superior user friendly webmail service provider. I have written to yahoo customer care and they were very nice but they cannot do anything as the spam filters are very strict. Plus if you have not known about google apps then you have really missed something. Yahoo ids also are regularly hacked. Never login to yahoo id from airport or public places, you will regret it. Chrome with gmail is also the best browser combo only caution is that you do not login and search else you will be marked for google ads :-). I have moved away from yahoo because they are not pro business and they do not care if your server is blocked. I have known many cases where in the yahoo users do not receive the mails in time and sometimes even never receive it. Gmail is superior pro business webmail service provider.

  • #gmail works for me…. …thumbs high !!

  • I’m just happy to get away from snail mail!! I use either email program for ‘mail’ only. I like Yahoo’s rather straightforward, uncluttered mail interface and navigational features; with gmail I have to search for even the most frequently used links etc. I don’t spend time organizing email(though I probably should) because Yahoo’s mail-search is great

I wish i can have a button to change my yahoo email to gmail, cause my yahoo email always been hacked, for many many times, but my gmail stay strong since the first day i use it, im actually moving to gmail step-by-step

Wai@ You should be using Two-step verification to secure your yahoo account. Here is the instruction https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN6050.html and always use a strong password. A strong password should look like this sfGs3G?)4F that contains symbols, numbers, capital and small alphabets.

in some extent i would like to prefer gmail because it is fast and easy unless i use both mails

  • Gmail sucks. Whenever I try to access Gmail from a different computer or from using Wi-Fi, it locks my account because the stupid programme thinks somebody is trying to hack my account. Gmail is totally useless when I am travelling because I try to access messages using computers located in business class airport lounges or using Wi-Fi. I cannot access Gmail when I am in a different country. It tells me a temporary access code will be sent to my mobile phone. I do not use mobile phone in some foreign countries because roaming charges can run very steep. I can never access Gmail when I need to access email. Another problem with Gmail is that important messages might not land in my inbox. Months later, I would find that Gmail took control of my account and directed some messages to various folders called promotions, updates, and other nonsense. For example, when I sent a private message to a colleague asking for recommendation letter for my job promotion, he immediately replied, but I did not get the message because the stupid Gmail programme assumed it was promotional email because the subject contained the word ‘promotion’. Flight change messages from airlines end up going to a folder names ‘updates’. All this without my knowledge or consent. On my iPhone, I can’t simply delete a message in inbox by using the delete button. First, I need to ‘move’ it to trash folder to delete it. I can’t understand why anybody would use Gmail when you have little control over you email and it cannot be easily accessed from other computers and in other locations. The mail interface of Gmail sucks too. Why couldn’t it be simple to click of reply button when replying to a message? Why all the complicated dialogue boxes?

I love Yahoo mail. First, it is easy to use. It does not play tricks on me. It does not send important messages to some unknown folder without informing me it did so. I have no problem accessing Yahoo mail in foreign countries, in airport lounges, and in various locations using Wi-Fi or other internet connections. On the downside, Yahoo mail loads slowly when using a slow-speed internet service because of the ads and there is more junk mail to deal with. But, it is reliable and I don’t have to worry about accessing it when I need to access important messages.

    • I have changed my opinion. Yahoo Mail sucks too. I changed password when repeatedly prompted by Yahoo. At first, the password worked, but the next day it stopped working. There is no help available at all when Yahoo mail fails.

Adam@ Your points are valid and sometime it annoys me too. Thanks for your review on both.

  • I use both and I much prefer Yahoo! I like Gmail’s tabs but it doesn’t allow you to create custom ones which sucks. I find I’m much more organized with Yahoo and I feel like, despite what people tell me, the spam filter on Yahoo is much better. Everything is always filtered the way I set it up while in Gmail I still get near constant spam infiltrating my main box.

  • I love gmail so much

Since beginning and fro last 10 years I am using yahoo mail
service. It was heavy to load initially but no other
option was there. Google came then but ymail kept updating
Now with advent of windows 8 ymail shifyed focus
on simplicity and prefered cleaner looks.

U can now attach larger files though.
Only one problem, after login from IE screen
asks to update to firefox or ssfari. Time will
heal that also. Yahoo news are good post logout.
    I love ymail.
