We always make use of file compressors and decompressors. In this internet age we can send all our files via internet and there isn’t any need to create CD’s and send them via post or handing over them to the person. But the only limitation in sending files via internet is the file size. Not all the sites allow sending of high sized files. Even e-mail attachments have to be limited to a certain size limit. Not only sending of files, but also to use less space on our hard disk we need to compress files. Here compressors come to use. There are many file compressors in the world. Various compressors offer various features and function differently. Lets have a look at some of the most popular file compressors.

Most Popular and Useful File Compressors and Decompressors

1.) WinZip

WinZip is one among the oldest file compressors available in the market. Well its used by less people now as there are many other alternatives available to it. Well it’s still the most popular one. Well if you ask an old software user or computer geek about a file compressor, his answer will be WinZip as it was used then. WinZip can be used to decompress Zip, Zipx, RAR, 7Z, BZ2, CAB, IMG, ISO, etc files.

2.) WinRar

Second comes WinRar. Well it’s a thousand times advanced than WinZip and offers a variety of features. Although there are a lot of winrar and winzip alternatives available, but  according to my experience WinRar is faster than WinZip. WinRar offers many features few among which are creating equal compressed files of a larger file which allows us to send the entire file in parts via e-mail or file upload services. Only bad thing about WinRar is that it isn’t free. But good things come for a price! WinRar can extract files of CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, BZ2,  ACE, UUE, JAR, ISO, 7Z, Z, etc extensions.

A fact about WinRAR: WinRAR supports archives and files up to 8,589 billion gigabytes in size. The No. of archived files is, for all practical purposes, unlimited.

3.) 7 Zip

7Zip file compressor

After the above two compressors comes 7 Zip. It’s the one people use after WinRar, the reason being “7 Zip is free”. Well I love 7 Zip application. 7 Zip supports ARJ, CPIO, NSIS, CAB, CHM, ISO, LZH, DEB LZMA, MSI, DMG, HFS RAR, etc type of files. Well if you can’t afford to buy WinRar, try 7 Zip. It rocks too!

4.) IZarc

Izarc is the best freeware archive utility supporting many archive formats like; 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, etc. IZarc boasts of a modern and easy-to-use interface. Also IZArc provides support for encoded files and most compressed, as well as access to many powerful tools and features. Well the great thing is that IZarc comes for free!

5.) AlZip

AlZip is software for extracting and compressing files. It also supports a wide range of formats some of which are RAR, TAR, 7Z, Z, etc. Well AlZip isn’t available for free!

My Recommendation:

I will suggest you to use IZarc as it’s free, but if you can afford a few dollars you can probably go for WinRar or AlZip.
